Improving the Lives of Cats with Feline Leukemia (FeLV)
Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) is a retrovirus that primarily affects a cat’s immune and hematopoietic systems.
It is transmitted through close contact between cats, mainly via saliva and prolonged social interaction. Once infected, cats may develop different types of infection patterns:
Progressive infection:
persistent viral replication with detectable antigenemia and higher risk of clinical disease.
Regressive infection:
viral integration into the host genome with minimal or undetectable active replication.
Focal (atypical) infection:
localized viral replication in specific tissues.
FeLV is not a single uniform condition but a dynamic viral process that can evolve differently in each patient.
Clinical consequences may include:
- Immunosuppression
- Anemia
- Lymphoma
- Secondary infections
- Chronic inflammatory conditions
Proper management requires:
- Comprehensive clinical evaluation
- Identification of the infection stage
- Periodic monitoring
- A structured therapeutic strategy rather than isolated monotherapy
At PFC, we work with combination-based protocols designed to address both viral replication and immune modulation, always under veterinary supervision.
