What is Feline Calicivirus (FCV)?

Feline Calicivirus (FCV) is a highly contagious RNA virus that primarily affects the upper respiratory tract and oral cavity in cats.

It is one of the most common causes of:

sneezing
Nasal and ocular discharge
Oral ulcers
Chronic gingivostomatitis
Persistent oral inflammation

Oral ulcers

In some cases, the virus may persist chronically, contributing to recurrent or treatment-resistant inflammatory conditions.

FCV may present as:
  • Acute, self-limiting infection
  • Chronic carrier state
  • Severe inflammatory oral disease
  • Individual clinical assessment
  • Differentiation between active infection and carrier status
  • A therapeutic strategy aimed at reducing viral replication and modulating inflammatory response

At PFC, antiviral tools may be considered in selected cases as part of a structured protocol under veterinary supervision.
